This is a jammed live-version of "How Many Fingers?", taken from my album SECOND WIND PHENOMENON that I played on the spectacular "Electric Eclectic / Phantomnoise Records & Suburban Trash Industries LABELNIGHT" on the 12th of May in 2007. The gig took place in the impressive Moritzbastei in Leipzig, a wide ancient cellar that was re-discovered in the early 1970ies. IMO one of the most spectacular places in Germany to perform as an artist.

The track was jammed live with a YAMAHA RS7000 only while the intro consisted of the hyped and pumped-up noise hiss of the analogue mixer that ran through a chain of ALESIS MOD/FX (bitrman -> philtre -> smashup) units. The hiss suddenly appeared at the sound-check stage, so I spontanously decided to use it. Thanx to Klang Sergej for the awesome introduction and announcement. Best one so far. ;-)

This is my contribution to the current heatwave. "Phänomenologie" is one of this rare tracks that obviosuly come out of unconscious sources and have their own quality of timelessness. As a musician it gives you the feeling that you where not envolved in the process, as if it came through the window and went right in to the machines. If I listen to it now I notice that it resembles the spirit of today's Dubstep but with very supressed Beats (actually the PCF-Filter of ReBirth 2). So, open your windows and play this (duh) "summertune" to your neighbours at full volume. They won't stop you since they might not be able to move their bodies in this bloody heat...

When twila.too and my studio-partner Numinos came up with this new collaboration earlier this year, I was pretty surprised by what I was hearing. As managing a rather experimental freeform Label I was listening to an incredible catchy and melancholic little pop-pearl that can simply be described as the perfect summer tune. The Original Mix is a blend of sweet and cleverly produced Electronic Pop with a strong french touch and an extremely deep and personal lyric work by twila.too that adds a serious and sad tone to an otherwise very catchy and airy dance tune, which, I don't dare to say, has a rather radio-friendly structure. To compensate for so much mass-appeal (sorry, by the way) we added a bunch of deep remixes by well-known electronic underground protagonists: Mathias Schaffhäuser, The Lethal Oscillators, Kitbuilders and Me (Bob Humid) have all been inspried by twila.too's work with very different results and artisitic impact.

To round up this release we added a wild Remix of twila.too's "Those Eyes" by one of the most talented indian newcomers from the electronic field, Audio Pervert's Sawtooth Remix is one of those tracks that you will love to play out loud on a large PA ... Enjoy!

Numinos ist als technisch versierter Autor der Technik- und Studio-Rubrik im GROOVE-Magazin und aufgrund seiner Arbeit als Produzent und Remixer einer der kompetentesten und tightesten deutschen Engineers in den Bereichen Dub, Minimal und Downbeat. Ob er bei einer der ersten deutsch-rappenden Hip Hop Bands wie Indeed [mit Uh-Young Kim] als Produzent hinter den Reglern stand, als Numinos kostbare Elektronik Dub-Perlen für das englische Imprint Pagoda Records durch das Analog-Delay gejagt hat oder seine deepen Klangepisoden in Audiologos und Filmmusiken zeichnet, seine Handschrift ist die eines Connaisseurs von Athmosphäre, Musikalität und Produktionstiefe. Dabei bleibt sein unverkennbares Stilmerkmal die Techniken des Dub: Sei es um in Live-Konzerten massive Hallwände und subsonische Bässe abzufeuern oder im Studio Klangepisoden zu konstruieren, die ihre Tiefe und Vielschichtigkeit aus komplexen Eimerketten-Delays und nirvanischen Feedback-Schleifen erhalten.
Denn Dub ist zwar ein ganzer Stil-Kosmos mit unzähligen Sub-Genres, mehr aber noch ist er eine technische und konzeptionelle Grundhaltung, in der das Studio zum spielbaren Instrument wird. Somit werden innerhalb des Seminars vom Roots-Dub eines King Tubby bis hin zum Minimal-Techno im Basic Channel-Stil die Basics (u.a. Mischung, Effekt-Patching, Feedback-Delays) aber auch angewandte Tricks aus dem persönlichen Giftschrank des Klangwizards vermittelt werden.
Dabei wird musikalisch als auch technisch der Bogen vom 70er Roots-Dub mit Analog-Hardware bis hin zu Dubstep an DAWs gespannt werden. Vor diesem Hintergrund werden inbesondere Hybrid-Produktionstechniken erarbeitet, bei denen das Beste aus der analogen und digitalen Welt miteinander verbunden wird.
Die Themen-Bereiche im Einzelnen: Geschichte (Root-Dub, Musiker, Mythen) Analytisches Hören Das Mischpult als Instrument (Aux-Wege, Feedback-Schleifen, EQing) Der Effekte als Stilmittel (Analog / Digital Delays, Flanger, Reverb u.a.) Instrumentierung (Bass / Sub-Bass, Off-Instrumente) Struktur (Live-Dub / Automation) Mischung (Kompression, EQing, Plug-Ins) Analog oder Digital (Praxisbeispiele analog und an der DAW)

Gleetchplug has developed a stylish new music software that has a clearly limited but inspiring concept: It reproduces the sound of a typical "Studio für elektronische Klangerzeugung". I'm glad its called "Berna" and not "Stocki" though I live in Cologne, one of the capitals for early electronic music ... But I am babbling, hear for yourself:

It also features some heavy weight sub-basses and cut-up vocal snippets and 2 alternating snares which altogether create an organic groove, hold together by a few instances of UAD-1 LA-2As. Interestingly this little tune didn't get old at all if we look at actual Nu Disco mayhem and the overall growing magnitude of rave-signal oscillations. As music industry suffered tremendous changes and is currently in a vibrant mode of self-destruction and reinvention, it became almost impossible to finance a quality music label. We understand that this in fact gives the full control back to idealistic artists and labels who can now find their perfect environmental niches without being forced to please established scenes or annoying "markets" because there is nothing there to earn. In times of digital releases and blog-based guerilla-marketing, "label-budgets" don't count much anymore. But never before during music-history, music lovers have witnessed a larger amount of released music. A lot of these productions are of extremely high quality. In contrary to popular beliefs, it is a splendid time to release music ...

So the Dead Walk Again. SERVE & DESTROY RECORDINGS, which was in a stasis for a couple of years since its well-received inaugration in 1999 through 2001, is back on the block and on the cologne underground electronic network itself. How come? To be honest, we haven't been really sooooo dead but things went slow. 2006 has seen the release of SECOND WIND PHENOMENON, Bob Humid's highly reviewed electronic oeuvre which has now been made available to many new listeners as a digital release.

Actually we have been releasing new records since beginning of 2009 due to a freshly signed contract with GROOVE ATTACK DIGITAL / GOOD2GO who serve us as an agregator / distributor for our digital catalogue. That means that from this year on you can get all actual and future SERVE & DESTROY productions plus the back-catalogue on all relevant digital music platforms such as iTunes, Beatport, DJ Download, ZERO-INCH, Finetunes, Nokia, soulseduction, Zooloader, Dancetracks, and many, many others ...

On the other hand that means that we will continue to SERVE you deep and unconventional electronic and electro-acoustic music, with that ballsy attitude that justifies the word "DESTROY" in our label-name. We are not a trend-following label at all but are open to playful variations and forms of actual, future and past electronic music production and styles. NEUE Reaktor 5 Crashkurse mit DER TANTE RENATE bei der FAT OF EXCELLENCE pro audio class in Köln *** 6. & 7.2.2009 ***

In seiner ersten Version hiess REAKTOR, das Flagschiff der berliner Softwareschmiede Native Instruments, noch GENERATOR 1.0 und wurde optional mit einer ISA-Soundkarte, die für damalige Verhältnisse sehr niedrige Latenzen bot, ausgeliefert.

In der Welt von Musikproduktion und Studio bedingte diese eierlegende Wollmilchsau schnell einen Paradigmenwechsel. Erstmalig war es möglich komplexe Klangerzeuger wie Synthesizer, Sampler oder Effektgeräte virtuell am Bildschirm zusammenzustecken und wie echte Hardware zu benutzen. Mittlerweile sind die virtuellen Klangerzeuger von NI ein etablierter Standard in sämtlichen relevanten Studios und aus Generator ist heute REAKTOR 5 geworden. Ein komplexer modularer Synthesizer. Komplexe Software braucht komplexe Piloten. Es ist gerade für Einsteiger nicht immer einfach in REAKTOR eine funktionierende Maschine zusammen zu basteln. Aus diesem Grunde haben wir niemanden geringeres als Norman Kolodziej alias Der Tante Renate dazu verpflichtet, seines ehemalige Studienabschlussarbeit über REAKTOR in einen knackigen Workshop zu verwandeln. Gesagt, getan.

Der Teilnehmer bekommt eine Einführung in Native Instruments Software Flagschiff REAKTOR und lernt die Funktionsweise häufig eingesetzter Module kennen und diese zu benutzen. Auf dieser Grundlage werden sodann verschiedene gängige Syntheseformen (subtraktiv / additiv / granular / physical modeling / fm / wavetable) erläutert bzw. in Eigenarbeit am Rechner gebaut und ausprobiert. Das gleiche gilt für die Effektsektion. Wir sehen uns an, wie die geläufigsten Effekte (Filterbasierte, delaybasierte, Dynamics u.a.) konstruiert sind und bauen mit diesem Wissen eigene Effekte am Rechner, die wir dann ausprobieren und evtl. optimieren. Eigenes Notebook mit Audio-Interface ist eine gute Voraussetzung, aber nicht zwingend notwendig.

Paradigmenwechsel

Als Universal Audio vor einigen Jahren die UAD-1 DSP-Karte auf den Markt brachte, überschlugen sich die Testredakteure vor Freude angesichts gestiegener Plug-In-Counts und der Möglichkeit legendäres Outboard wie Pultec EQs, LN1176- oder LA-2-Kompressoren auf gewöhnlichen PCs und MACs laufen zu lassen. Dagegen blieben viele Besitzer der Originalhardware eher skeptisch: "Digitale Nachbildungen der Hardware werden niemals so gut klingen wie die Originale!" raunten die Unken überall. So kann man sich täuschen, technologische Revolutionen ziehen nämlich gerne einfach am Menschen vorbei.

Mit extrem realistischen Nachbildungen wie dem EMT-140 Plattenhall, dem Roland Space Echo oder dem NEVE1081 EQ Kanalzug räumte Universal Audio massenweise Industriepreise ab und etablierte sich in nur wenigen Jahren als Big Player DSP-gestützter Tontechnik. Das Vertrauen in die virtuellen Replikatonen ist mittlerweile so hoch dass strenggenommen kein modernes Tonstudio ohne mindestens ein oder zwei UAD-Karten auskommen möchte. Und wer sich im Tonstudiobetrieb auskennt, weiß auch wie es dort mittlerweile oft vonstatten geht: Studios die massiv in Outboard investiert haben, haben leichtes Spiel dem Kunden nahezubringen dass eine gute Produktion diese Hardware unbedingt benötigt. Es ist sehr eindrucksvoll in einen Raum voller Vintage Outboard zu gehen und mit diesen Geräten zu arbeiten. Doch wenn der Kunde nicht mehr da ist und die Studiouhr läuft, greifen viele Top-Producer gerne mal schnell zu den hochwertigen Plug-Ins. Auf der Habenseite steht Total-Recall und die Möglichkeit mehrere "wohltuenede" Instanzen eines berühmten Geräts in einem Mix zu verwenden. 6-stellige Hardwareinvestitionen in teures Outboard sind in Krisenzeiten wie diese mittlerweile zu einem Luxus mutiert. Die Zeiten haben sich geändert.

Doch wie arbeite ich damit?

Eine UAD-1 oder UAD-2 DSP-Karte ist schnell eingebaut und installiert, doch wie hole ich aus einem FAIRCHILD-Compressor, einem NEVE33609 Buscompressor oder einem Pultec EQ jene klangliche Substanz heraus die einige Studiobetreiber dazu gebracht hat einzelne Gerätegattungen zu Heiligen Werkzeugen zu erklären (Es gibt Studiobesitzer die ihren Fairchild zärtlich JESUS nennen)?

Bob Humid legte dann mit seinem letzten Album "Second Wind Phenomenon", das auf dem umtriebigen Dresdner Label Suburban Trash erschien, die Messlatte für aufwendig produzierte elektronische Musik, unter Begleitung illustrer Gäste wie Holger Czukay, Coloma, Igor Sirodhza, twila.too und Carla Subito, ein gutes Stück höher. Es ist ein als Hintergrundmusik völlig untaugliches, voller Widersprüche und von fordernder, obsessiver Kraftanstrengungen strotzendes, mehrschichtiges elektronisches Album geworden, das am meisten Sinn macht, wenn man es von Anfang bis Ende auf einer gut aufgestellten HiFi-Anlage, im Halbdunkel, durchhört und dabei nichts anderes tut als Zuhören. Für die Tour hat Bob das Vorzeichen invertiert: Die Sounds der Albumtracks werden mit Zuhilfenahme seines berüchtigten Livekoffers in Echtzeit geremixt und in britische 140 BPM schnelle Dubstep- und Breaksgewänder gesteckt bis der Tanzboden leise glüht. Das Versprechen einer verheißungsvolle Zukunft und die gesungene Sehnsucht von Maschinen.

Joker Nies [is a happy tweaker].

In den letzten Jahren breitet sich, besonders in den USA, eine Bewegung aus, die einen völlig anderen Zugang zu elektronischen Klangerzeugern sucht. Anstatt sich mit den aktuellen uniformen Massen-Produkten zufrieden zu geben, versucht man z.T. recht simple, oft „historische“ Geräte (1980er Jahre), in individuelle elektronische Instrumente zu verwandeln. Dabei ist die Idee nicht wirklich neu. Der Multi-Media Künstler und Musiker Reed Ghazala, der als Kultvater der Bewegung gilt und auch den Begriff „Circuit-Bending“ prägte, begann bereit in den späten 60er Jahren mit der Modifikation einfacher Transistor-Schaltungen.

Entgegen der tradierten Methode im Umgang mit Elektronika, bei der das Schaltungskonzept als bindend angesehen wird und es daher nur um die Behebung von Fehlern geht, wird beim Circuit-Bending aktiv in das Schaltungsdesign eingegriffen, um klanglich interessante „Fehlfunktionen“ abrufbar zu machen. Da zumeist keine Service-Unterlagen vorhanden sind, anhand derer die genaue Funktion einer Schaltung deutlich wird, arbeitet man hier, unter Berücksichtigung einiger Sicherheitsregeln für Mensch und Machine, oft mit Trial-and-Error Methoden. Mit minimalstem technischen Grundwissen und unter Beachtung der bindenden Sicherheits-Maßnahmen kann so auch jeder Laie ein klanglich sehr beschränktes Gerät in ein einzigartiges elektronisches Instrument mit verblüffenden neuen Qualitäten verwandeln, wobei die Original-Funktionen nach wie vor erhalten bleiben.

Jenseits dieser Methoden, bereits vorhandene Geräte zu modifizieren, geht ein kleiner Kreis von kreativen Elektronikern bereits einen Schritt weiter. Es entstehen neu entwickelte Ansätze und Schaltungskonzepte, die stark von den selbstreferenziellen Serienprodukten der industriellen Hersteller abweichen und dabei bereits vom Konzept her vielfältige individuelle konfigurations-Möglichkeiten bieten, oder geradezu herausfordern.

In seinem Workshop wird der Musiker und Toningenieur Joker Nies, Redakteur angesehener Fachzeitschriften wie Keyboards / Sound & Recording und selbst seit Jahren in der Szene aktiv, Historie, Circuit-Bending Grundlagen, Techniken und Geräte in Wort und Bild und Tat vorstellen und verschiedene seiner modifizierten Instrumente zu Gehör bringen.

INFO [ENGLISCH] ZU DER PERSON JOKER NIES: Born 1958 in Dortmund, Germany, lives and works in Cologne, Germany, as a musician, sound-designer, sound-engineer, and technical editor for the German Keyboards magazine. Since the early 80´s, Nies experiments with all kinds of electronic sound-sources, like modular-analog synthesizers, individually designed electronic devices, DSP-based systems (like Kyma/Capybara) and software based sound-sources. During the early 90´s, modifying the Omnichord became his initiation to what is known as circuit-bending. Since that time a steadily growing number of devices has been converted from simple toys into alien sound devices.
Recent activities include software synth-design in MAX/MSP for the german Keyboards magazine, and production and sound design for radio-plays. Nies also holds workshops and tutorials about circuit-bending and synth-design in MAX/MSP. His musical activities are centered around an improvisational aproach, though he also cooperates in composition-based projects like the activities of the multimedia project REALTIME-RESEARCH and QUANTUM QUASI dance-projects. Joker Nies performs internationally with artists like John Butcher, Ernst Reijsinger, Thomas Lehn, Alan Silva, Dave Tucker, Seth Josel and many others, in various constellations.

Die Geschichte des Masterings ist eine Geschichte voller Irrtümer. So oder so ähnlich müsste eine Einleitung zu diesem Thema wohl lauten, denn es gibt kaum einen Bereich in der modernen Tontechnik der mehr mythologisiert und thematisch verstümmelt wurde. Sprücheklopfer gibt es viele: "Das muss man alles analog machen, digital klingt scheiße!" - "Umso lauter das Master desto besser." Mit der Wirklichkeit hat das alles nicht viel zu tun, mit wirlich fettem Sound schon mal gar nicht. Vielmehr entscheidet die Erfahrung sämtlicher an der Produktion beteiligten Engineers über die Qualität eines Masterings. Es ist beispielsweise recht einfach einen Track laut zu bekommen, aber ob er dann noch gut klingt, ist wirklich die Kardinalsfrage. Ein exzellentes Mastering sollte transparent, druckvoll und detaillreich klingen, die einzelnen Elemente des Mixes wohltuend hervorholen. Doch gerade in den heutigen Zeiten der sogenannten "Loudness Wars" häufen sich selbst bei der Musikindustrie die, aus künstlerischer und handwerklichen Sicht, misslungenen finalen Masters.

Bob Humid, der sich seit vielen Jahren enthusiastisch und erfolgreich auf den Pfaden eines Mastering Engineers und Sound-Designers befindet und für zahlreiche Labels, Bands, Firmen und Künstler [siehe aktuelle Diskographie] die finale Veredlung eines Mixes durchgeführt hat, wird in diesem Kurs versuchen das komplexe Thema Mastering auf lockere aber sinnstiftende Weise den Kursteilnehmern nahe zu bringen. Dabei darf jeder Teilnehmer einen eigenen Track mitbringen, der noch während des Seminars von Bob Humid final veredelt wird. Denn jedes neue Stück Musik muss individuell parametrisiert werden, ein sinnvolles Zurückgreifen auf Presets existiert nicht.

INFO: Zum Einsatz in diesem Kurs werden die DAW-Software SEQUOIA V10 in Verbindung mit 2 x PCI Universal Audio UAD-1 DSP-Karten, sowie diverse High-End Masteringtools der renommierten Klangschmiede Algorithmix, kommen. Sometimes a little (or much) noise is what a fancy, modern clubtrack just needs. Everybody seems to be into into distortion and sawtooth-madness currently and this fact of modern music production makes Minimal Techno Enthusiast feel very old while it makes actual (new) rave kids scream and jump...

In case of our new band-project Waving Not Drowning we decided to use Holger Heckeroth's fantastic little screambox YOKO ONE for intros and breaks to add this little extra "outch!". We will add a few little technical details (and pics) to this amazingly quirky noisemaker (which takes advantages on quantum-mechanical effects due to a parameter that underpowers certain circuits) very soon... Hi-End Gear - A New Pro Audio Conference

Finally Germany seems to get a yet small, but nevertheless promising, alternative to the most valuable, but somewhat elitary managed Tonmeistertagung which claims entrance fees ranging up to 490,- € (for non-members at specific Symposiums). Taking place in the former rooms of Cologne's most renown old EMI / Electrola Vinyl-Pressing-Plant, the Hi-End Gear Conference sound promising enough for me to be issued here, especially because the organizers decided to pull out a very sexy leitmotif: "High-End is An Attitude Not A Gear Alone". Wise words in times where the diametrically opposite forces "powerful modern audio technology" and "low production budgets" dance their shizoid waltz.

Tom Jansen, the originator of the "Hi-End Gear Pro Audio Conference", introduces his new baby on the web-site with the following statement: "The Hi-END GEAR Conference, a new and independent tradeshow for studio recording, mixing and mastering gear, will take place for the first time, this October. In addition to many exhibitors of hi-end analog outboard, there will be a focus on room-acoustics, monitoring, microphones, plus converter and clocking technologies, too. ... It is our belief that the Hi-END GEAR Conference although a small show, will become a grand step in this process, where professional producers, engineers, studio staff, and students, alike, will enjoy the exhibition, while they check out new gear and make contacts with other professionals in the business."

With very fair entrance prices an and a most interesting choice of excibitors, ranging from Universal Audio, Fairman, Rupert Neve Designs, Lavry, Brauner, Tubetech, SSL, SPL to many other well-established manufactureres of High-End Equipment, the "Hi-End Gear" will definetly be the place where I will spend the weekend of the 25th to 27th of October 2007. After already being really, really naughty with the customers who bought MPC 2000s in the late 90s Akai lead the introduction of the MPC 2500 pretty much to a fantastic desaster again. Anyone recalls? The MPC 2000 was so buggy when released that it represented more of an option to a hardware then a finished product. It took months until it was really useable but the cult around the MPC Line (originating back to the superb Roger Linn's MPC 60 to 3000 models) was so strong that it had almost no influence on reviewers in audio magazines. So it seems history is repeating again - hey wait, don't fall asleep! this time the story ends up much more interesting...

The purchase of the shiny new black polished MPC 2500 soon brought headache and anger management problems to some users who bought the machine right after release: Twice a week the MPC would freeze while generating folders or destroy older work by overwriting existing data. Patterns and sounds with long filenames could be saved but when the machine was asked to reload them the filenames had already been shortened, therefore those programs where corrpupted too. But that wasn't all the pain: The menu of the MPC 2500 XL would erraticly jump inbetween menu-points and the keys & jogwheel would start to feel old within a few days of hardcore editing. When asked about refunds or repairs the shop where you bought the MPC would point to Akai service which in return would simply not answer your emails. The regularly updated new MPC 2500 OSs solved some of the problems but the erratic file-managment persisited. In one word: Horrfying.

But this time the minutious effort of the Akai engineers to drive the new MPC 2500 users into sheer madness has been destroyed by some humane japanese code warrioirs with reverse engineering abilities. Hey, its just a computer with a harddisk after all, so it can be hacked. The so called JJ OS is the effort of a japanese programer group called Japenese Jenius that already hacked the cute little MPC 1000 and gained extreme cult status in the electronic music world within short time. In an age where modifications and extreme circuit bending activities are a popular sport it is not so surprsing that someone modifies an existing OS of a hardware. Nevertheless its amazing that a private person can fulfill the task of what a complete development facility seems to be incapable of. Shame on you Mr. and Mrs. Akai. You can do better then that. Yes, we know that Akai has been sold to Numark and there has been changes. But so what? Are you people selling hardware or not? If the MPC is not finished why don't you simply make the OS open source and give the people an SDK at their disposition?

However. The JJ OS for the 2500er is based on the hack of the MPC 1000 OS, therefore some features of the 2500er are wiped out when you install it. But since you gain some other very valuable hot features which nobody thought would be implemented any day soon it is pretty much worthwile to try it out. A CD-burning option is anounced for 2007.

One question remains: Why did Akai ever fire Roger Linn?

F airlight, the inventor of the Fairlight CMI and the one and only company that feverishly insists on pushing the envelope regarding the development and manufacturing of high-end digital mxing consoles that could easily win any set decoration award for Sci-Fi Movies has (drrrrrumroll) ...well, pushed the envelope again. But this time its not about the looks, the sexy knobs and pulsating buttons or slick sliding futuristic foxy faders. No! Its about the heart of (your PC) machine and about making your CPU jealous as a jellyfish envying the strength of aerogel.

The Fairlght CC-1 is a PCI-Card that fits into most modern Windows XP-based PCs and enables the performance-hungry sound-engineer-of-today to evoke an unhealthy feeling of world-domination-super-powers within the deepest soul of the audio tweaking heart. The Card introduces a new FPGA-powered Multimedia-Engine-On-A-Chip developed by Altera Corporation promising a quantum leap in performance that is capable of "immediately obsolete DSP". Howzthat you ask?

According to Fairlight the Crystal Core CC-1 "enables two hundred plus channels of audio recording, editing, mixing, I/O and plug-ins, with extremely low latency and full processing capability on every channel. Dynamic Resolution Optimization (DRO) feature supports concurrent floating and fixed-point manipulations." This sounds indeed sexy, but what does it mean concretely? Let's look at the features: Those include 8 fully parametric EQs, 3 Dynamic-Stages for Compressor, Enhancer and Limiters, 72 Bit Resolution on every channel, ASIO compatibilty and the ability to connect VST- and Rewire-Environments into your CC-1. This comes pretty close to what would resemble the funcionality and sound of a Fairlight dream console but without the actual control surface.

Anyone keen on mixing-down those supercool but somehow thinly sounding Reason tracks on a Fairlight CC-1? Pump the shit up. You'll need something around 5000.00 $ for a basic system which might just give you the ability to do large industry mix-downs at home. Needless to say that CC-1-equipped PCs are theoretically limitless cascadable and preserve their low latency behaviour. I don't have a necessity to mixdown 1000 audio channels at once but the word "Expandable" has never been more true.

The CC-1 might definetly "shake the digital media world to its core by delivering new standards and raw performance capabilities previously unattainable even with the most expensive DSP based solutions" as the Fairlight promotion department claims.. Whether or not it really "instantly enables powerful new business and production models that will open up new opportunities for everyone” will be proven by the future. At the end of the day every Hardware FPGA, CPU or DSP needs useful software and I am not yet ready to give away my two creamy and phatty Universal Audio UAD-1 DSP Cards and all the little Fairchilds 670s, LA-2As, Pultecs and Neves that live inside... But it seems Fairlight is very open to OEM-cooperations and stirring up all the aforementioned facts could lead to some incredibly scary new products for audio professionals. I am really anxious to know what happens next...
